In search of the elusive Oregon White and Oregon Black Truffle through sustainable, sound harvesting techniques, NW Truffle Dogs is offering you the opportunity to train your dog to find this amazing Oregon native truffle. NW Truffle Dogs

The Oregon Truffle Festival leads in promoting the exclusive use of truffle dogs to ensure harvest of the highest quality truffles while preventing the environmental harm caused by raking. NW Truffle Dogs has partnered with the Oregon Truffle Festival to produce the Truffle Dog Training Seminar held at the Festival each January, and in the development of standards for certification of truffles harvested by trained truffle dogs.

Training Services

MycoPilot - Ground School

This program includes four hours of private training and one foray. Classes are typically one hour per week unless other arrangements are made. By the end of the course your K9 will be able to locate truffles in a scent container in the field. You will also be able to take home training aids and instructions to keep making progress on your own.

MycoPilot - Flight Training

This eight week course consists of eight hours of private class and field training, two forays and unlimited phone consultation throughout the course. The course begins with beginning level scent work, and progresses through working with distractions and developing an alert. By the end of the course your K9 will be able to locate truffles in the field. You will receive a training kit to further your progress between classes. The course includes two field trips to a local tree farm or wild truffle environment to try your hand at turning up a few fungi in their native environment. The primary difference between Ground School and Flight Training is the amount of time spent working on distractions and environmental barriers to success.

MycoPilot - Boot Camp

In this two week on-campus course your dog will start with beginning scent training and move rapidly up through proofing and distraction training. Web cameras will allow you to remotely observe training sessions real time. On the last two days of training you will learn all of the handling skills necessary to make the most of your skilled hunter.

MycoPilot - Academy

Designed for dogs 1-4 years of age, this complete academy is intended to produce a professional level truffle dog ready to hit the forests and plantations. The Academy is 4-6 months in length, includes procuring a suitable dog if necessary, and covers everything from obedience all the way to completing the MycoPilot certification. The last four weeks include handler training.

MycoPilot Certification

Having the MicoPilot Certification tells the world that your dog is a bona fide truffle dog and the truffles you harvest are Certified Hound Found. The certification test gives you and your dog an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and proficiency at sound harvest practices that result in premium high quality truffles. Call for details.
