NW Truffle Dogs

The Oregon Truffle Festival leads in promoting the exclusive use of truffle dogs to ensure harvest of the highest quality truffles while preventing the environmental harm caused by raking. NW Truffle Dogs has partnered with the Oregon Truffle Festival to produce the Truffle Dog Training Seminar held at the Festival each January, and in the development of standards for certification of truffles harvested by trained truffle dogs.

NW Truffle Dogs employs positive, reward based opportunistic dog training. By creating an encouraging environment and allowing dogs to explore and do what comes naturally to them, we are able to mark and reinforce the behavior that we want. In this case, finding truffles.

Our program starts truffle hunting initiates in a no-lose training environment. The need for coaxing and luring is almost always unnecessary. Through observation, encouragement and good timing, the behaviors we want develop rapidly with minimal intervention from us. Dogs begin to work eagerly and enthusiastically, easing the transition to the distraction fraught real world environment that often results in breakdown.

Canines are natural hunters and dogs are able to discern scents at concentrations 100 million times lower than humans. Truffles emmit a strong fragrance that presents little challenge for our four legged friends, but they need us to help them decide which scent to find and how to tell us when they found it.
